The Butterfly Effect is a group of interactive works exploring the influence that outside forces have on young women as they come of age.
Through different connections and interlockings of systems of strings I am creating an interactive ecosystem of a young girl growing up. The strings are the curators, tied up to past experiences, belief systems, stereotypes, dreams, and fears. Puppetry mechanics establish a suspended reality in the viewers to let themselves believe that the piece is naturally moving on its own even though it is being controlled by an outside force. The curation of the piece’s movements mimic the butterfly effect that is script that women learn to walk as they come of age.
We curate with our limbs every second of every day. The joints of our jaws create strings for other people when we speak. All the while, the media verberates in the background. Disguised as white noise, distractions, and entertainment, the knots tied by those forces tug at opinions that formulate into stances.
Where do we draw the line between taking responsibility for our actions and placing blame on the strings that have informed our being?
